How to make a
low-fat smoothies?
Step
One
Add 8 to 16 oz of fresh or
frozen fruit into blender. I prefer to add 8 oz of frozen
blueberries and 8 oz of frozen strawberries. Adding these first
ensures that they will get blended faster.
Step
Two
Add 1 whole ripe frozen
banana. Break into pieces.
Step
Three
Add one 8 oz container of low
fat or non fat yogurt. Use rasperry yogurt. But choose a flavor to
suit your taste.
Step
Four
Add 8 oz to 16 oz of orange
juice. Other types of juices can work too.
Step
Five
Add 12-16 oz. of non fat milk
or a non-dairy drink like soy or rice milk to the blender or shaker
Step
Six
Blend until thick and creamy.
Add more juice or frozen fruit to reach your desired consistency.
Tips
1.
If
you're using your smoothie as a meal replacement, adding a green
plant powder is a great way to add nutrients and boost your energy.
2.
If
you are using a shaker, most fruits will not blend well. Bananas are
one exception. Mash a banana and then add it to the shaker with the
other ingredients.
3.
Frozen
fruit can be substituted for some or all of the ice, making for a
brighter flavor. You can freeze your own, or buy them pre-frozen.
4.
Adding
1/2 cup of yogurt or a banana will thicken and richen your smoothie,
but adding both will overwhelm it.
5.
Balance
tart, sweet and savory flavors. For example sesame seed paste makes
an interesting counterpoint to kiwi, peanut butter to banana, etc.
6.
If
you want to make the smoothie healthier include a scoop of whey or
soy protein powder.
Other
Tips
1.
Use
the yogurt container as a measuring tool. Most yogurts come in 8 oz
containers.
2.
Fresh
fruit is desirable, but it is much easier to keep several bags of
frozen fruit in your freezer, and the fact that it's frozen helps
keep the drink nice and cold.
3.
Smoothies
are addicting, so make a large batch so everyone can enjoy.
4.
Rinse
out the blender container as soon as your are done, otherwise the
it's much more difficult to wash later on.
Smoothies are great to put
healthy things in that are hard to eat/drink by themselves. I put
hemp protein powder, maca powder, green powder (spirulina, sea
vegetables, alfalfa leaf), probiotics, apple juice/pomegranate
juice, frozen banana, strawberries/blueberries in mine. The Magic
Bullet is great for mixing everything together too.
If you aren't into all the
powders yet, any kind of fruit always goes good together. Bananas
are a must for any smoothie (preferably frozen)- they make it
creamy. So bananas + berries + juice (orange, apple, cranberry,
etc.) and you're good to go!
It depends on what you put in
them. If you put in a lot of high fat and/or high sugar ingredients,
then yes, they are fattening. Your recipe sounds OK, but rather
heavy on sugar. The yogurt might be low-fat, but they often boost
the sugar content to make up for fat removal.
Get nofat or low fat yoghurt
and pour into blender add fruit of choice. I prefer Banana &
Strawberry but blueberries are good too. Good value to buy the
frozen fruits on cartons from supermarket and add these to yoghurt.
Instead of yoghurt you could use skimmed or semi skimmed milk.
How
can I lower the fat content of my smoothies?
There
are lots of small substitutions you can make to lower the fat
content of your smoothies. Use skim or soy milk instead of regular
milk, or frozen yogurt instead of ice cream. Add nutrition with some
wheat germ or protein powder. You can also reduce calories by
avoiding sweetened frozen fruit. Use fresh fruit instead.
